Mary's first marriage was to Hughie Magee. Mary met him while visiting the Shirk's (sister Elizabeth Sarah & brother-in-law
Rev Shirk). Hugh and Mary were only married about six months when Hugh died of Typhoid fever. Mary Jane then went back to
Liberty to help with the teaching in the Shirk's Amite County Seminary (Liberty, MS). There she met and married John Martin
Covington (marriage record Amite Cnty, Vol V) who had come down from Warren County, KY and opened a Drug Store in Liberty,
MS.
Mary's husband John died during the war between the states. During the Civil War the Union soldiers took everything that John
had left Mary Jane and the family except what they could take into one room of their house. The fact that Mary Jane was a
Yankee prompted the Union Soldiers to give her the opportunity of taking her children and what she could into the one room
while they occupied the rest of the house. She was not molested after that. After the Civil War Mary along with the Shirk's
reopened Seminary.
After John died Mary Jane married William Gordon widower with three children. For a time the two families lived at Keatchie,
LA near Shreveport, LA. William Gordon died there.
After Wlliam's death Mary Jane went to live with her daughters. She died in Shreveport, LA while visiting her daughter Emma.
She is buried in Longview, TX.
Notes: Mary Jane was living in Caddo Parish, LA in 1880.
