Lewis spent 31 years in
the U.S. Navy. Of his 12 years of foreign service eight were spent on duty in China. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer in
1943. In the fleet reserve before WWII, he volunteered for active duty and was assigned to recruiting which he continued
until his death. He was in the process of recruiting a young man in Birmingham, AL at the time of his death.
He and his wife Rose Sauls, never had any children. He is buried in the Tylertown (MS)
Cemetery.
