Return to Towns We Lived In!

Pittsfield is in the Berkshires, on the Housatonic River. The community was named for William Pitt, British statesman. Wealthy leisure class moved to the area in the late 19th century.

Well-known residents have included: Authors Herman Melville and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Herman Melville completed "Moby Dick" here.

Quotes:
"The central square of Pittsfield presents all the bustle of a thriving village - the farmers of the vicinity in light wagons, sulkies, or on horseback; stages at the door of the Berkshire Hotel, under the stoop of which sit or lounge the guests, stage-people, and idlers, observing or assisting the arrivals and departures
." -- The American Notebooks, Nathaniel Hawthorne.

It was beautiful here in the spring and summer when the trees were full of leaves. At Christmas time they would place a large tree in the center of the park on lite it.
